KUALA LUMPUR: Former international Tan Kim Her
has gone back to where he originally started – as a coach with the
men’s doubles department.
After two months of serving as an assessor for the national
team, Tan Kim Her will be back to coaching the men’s doubles. The
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided yesterday that he was
the right candidate to replace Paulus Firman ... for the time being.
KUALA
LUMPUR: World No. 1 singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei’s participation in
all international tournaments until the end of the year is now on hold
after an old injury returned to haunt him.
The pain on his ankle is causing Chong Wei discomfort.
“I feel the throbbing pain in the same ankle area which I injured
during the Thomas Cup Finals (in Wuhan) last year. It is affecting me
during training,” said Chong Wei.
“It has been a hectic year
for me and I think I am finally feeling the pinch. Maybe I have pushed
myself too hard and this may have put a lot of strain on my ankle.”
Chong Wei suffered an ankle injury during the Finals in Wuhan during
the tie against Denmark when he landed awkwardly in a match against
Peter-Gade Christensen.
Chong Wei said he would discuss his
participation in the last three tournaments for the year with the
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
“I am not sure now
whether I will be able to compete in these tournaments. First of all, I
need to look into this pain on my ankle and see whether it can be
managed in the next two days,” he said.
PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles shuttler Vivian Hoo is fired up about playing mixed doubles matches alongside Tan Wee Kiong.
“It’s been a while since I actually took mixed doubles seriously but there is no harm trying,” said Vivian.
“I believe that competing in the mixed doubles will make me a more
complete player ... since I’ll need to revert from my regular role of
playing at the back, with Khe Wei, to covering the front.
“It’ll be quite new to me and honestly I don’t know what to expect yet
as I haven’t had that many sessions with Wee Kiong because he has been
playing in tournaments in Europe.
“But I’m looking forward to the challenge, and the Hong Kong Open (Nov 19-24) will be a good place to see where we stand.”
KUALA
LUMPUR: Youngster Goh Jin Wei did not get off to the dream start she
had hoped for in the ongoing World Junior Championships in Bangkok.
But the 13-year-old Jin Wei believes that the experience she gained was
good enough in a bid to mount a stronger challenge for Malaysia when
the nation hosts the World Junior Championships in April in Alor Setar
next year.
“It has been a great
experience and I will be ready to give a better performance –
especially when the world junior meet is hosted at home,” said Jin Wei.
“It is unfortunate that I got injured but I just hope that my hamstring
injury is not serious. I will go home for treatment and hopefully, I
will be all right,” said Jin Wei.
“Overall, I learnt many
things during my first world junior meet. There are still many opponents
better than us right now in the world and after this experience, I feel
that there is a stronger urge within me to further improve myself as a
player. We need to catch up ... fast.”
