Great timing for Lin Dan return: Razif

KUALA LUMPUR: Former badminton doubles great Razif Sidek praised China’s badminton chief coach Li Yongbo for bringing back five-time world champion Lin Dan just in time.
On Sunday, the 31-year-old Lin Dan nailed the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in Gimcheon, South Korea. A week earlier, he won the China Masters Grand Prix Gold title in Changzhou, China.
The back-to-back tournaments were Lin Dan’s first two international stints since winning the world title for the fifth time in Guangzhou in August last year.
At the final, Lin Dan won the world title after his long-time rival Lee Chong Wei retired while trailing 17-20 in the rubber game.

Soon Huat claims Thomas Cup spot with Ramdan victory

KUALA LUMPUR: Determination has landed national men’s singles back-up shuttler Goh Soon Huat a place in the Thomas Cup squad for the first time.
The 24-year-old played a more aggressive game to beat former national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun 21-19, 21-15 in the Thomas Cup selection trials - held for the second time - at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara on Tuesday.
With his win, Soon Huat has now proven twice that he is the best player to represent the country as the fourth-ranked men’s singles player for the Finals in New Delhi from May 18-25.
He will join three others - world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Daren Liew.

Soon Huat also emerged tops in the first selection trials held last month, where he beat former internationals Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Tan Chun Seang. However, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) had decided to hold the second selection trials to accommodate Ramdan and former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli who were ill at the time.
Soon Huat was happy to come through the selection process again.
“I will not be the sparring player again in the Finals,” quipped Soon Huat, who had accompanied the team to the last Finals in Wuhan in 2012 as a sparring player.
“It was not an easy match against Ramdan. I changed my style of play and was more aggressive in my approach and I guess it worked for me,” he said.
In January this year, Soon Huat had lost narrowly to Ramdan in the qualifying tournament of the Malaysian Open at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil. And naturally, a neck-and-neck battle was expected this time around, but Soon Huat tore Ramdan apart and crushed the latter’s dream of becoming the next one from his famous Sidek family to play in the team event.

Malaysian badminton entering the big leagues

KUALA LUMPUR: An impressive league with big names and big money.
Welcome to Malaysia’s very own professional league - the Malaysia Purple League (MPL).
It will start this year, run from September to February, at the Lee Chong Wei Sports Arena and promises a total prize of RM2mil.
For a start, Malaysia’s superstar Lee Chong Wei and five-time world champion Lin Dan of China are set to be the main crowd pullers – with many more expected to grace the league like four-time world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, South Korea’s Lee Yong-dae and Indonesia’s Markis Kido.

A total of 12 clubs will battle it out with each club handled by Malaysia’s former greats like Lee Wan Wah, Datuk Misbun Sidek, Jalani Sidek, Ong Ewe Hock, Foo Kok Keong, Lim Pek Siah and Chor Hooi Yee. All the matches will be telecast live on Astro Arena (Channel 801), possibly reaching 3.9 million homes in Malaysia.
Each club can include up to four foreign players in a season and an auction of these players will be held later. A club can only bid on a maximum of two players in the top 32 bracket – to ensure the richer clubs do not monopolise the best players.
The format of play is different – each match in a tie will be played on a best of 11 points in three games.
What makes this league different from the ones in China, Indonesia and India is its emphasis on development.
Next year, the league will also concurrently host a league for players aged 19 and younger – creating a large pool of players with the hope of finding new talents.
The MPL was launched on Tuesday in the presence of Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and world No. 1 Chong Wei.

Ex-BAM shuttler Jagdish wins doubles title in Melbourne

KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) dropout Jagdish Singh is going great guns with his new club – Kawasaki Badminton Club. Jagdish and partner Roni Tan Wee Long, seeded fourth, won their first career international title when they upset second seed Raymond Tam-Glenn Warfe of Australia 21-14, 21-19 at the Victor Maribyrnong International in Melbourne, Australia.
Jagdish, who came through the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), was dropped from the national back-up squad last year and the Negri Sembilan lad decided to try his luck with Kawasaki this year.
In fact, Kawasaki also enjoyed a high in the international tournament when Millicent Wiranto of Indonesia won the women’s singles title while Chiang Jiann Shiarng came in second in the men’s singles event.
Said coach K. Yogendran: “This is our club’s best international result. Victories like this certainly motivate us and shows us that we are on the right track.”

The other coaches in the Kawasaki set-up are Li Mao, Yeoh Kay Bin and Vountus Indra Mawan.
Prior to this, Kawasaki’s best results were achieved last year through Chan Kwong Beng (men’s singles champion at Hanoi International Challenge) and Yogendran (men’s singles champion at Bangladesh International Challenge).

林丹的回歸‧宗偉的動力

Chong Wei believes Lin Dan will keep him decent

KUALA LUMPUR: The return of China’s Lin Dan is the perfect tonic for world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (pic).
Chong Wei said that Lin Dan’s re-emergence after almost eight months is good for the sport and that it would only motivate him to raise his game.
“I welcome his return. His presence will keep me on my toes. It will push me to train even harder. He is a strong opponent and I want to remain as his main challenger,” said Chong Wei.
Two-time Olympic Games champion Lin Dan made a successful comeback last week when he nailed the China Masters Grand Prix Gold title to jump 19 rungs from No. 104 to No. 83 in the world rankings.

And he is set to nick his second title at the ongoing Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in Gimcheon, South Korea.
The back-to-back GP Gold and ABC are his first two tournaments since winning his fifth world title last August in Guangzhou by beating Chong Wei in the final.
Chong Wei said that Lin Dan’s return and his own decision to stay until the 2016 Olympic Games would be good for badminton fans.
“I need to stay motivated until the 2016 London Olympic Games and Lin Dan’s return has given me a good reason to do so. I look forward to duelling against him and I’m sure it will excite the fans as well,” said Chong Wei.
The fans will be more than eager to see a re-match between Chong Wei and Lin Dan at the World Championships in Copenhagen in August. Such a scenario is possible if Badminton World Federation (BWF) award a wildcard to Lin Dan for the world meet.
Based on Friday’s World Championships qualifiers’ list released by BWF, Lin Dan did not make the cut. The top three representatives from China are Chen Long, Du Pengyu and Wang Zhengming.
Malaysia will have a smaller number of qualifiers for the world meet this year.
In women’s singles, former international and world No. 78 Sannatasah Saniru failed to make the cut although she is in the top 150 standing because the quota of 48 players has been filled.
Malaysia will have three pairs – Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong – in the men’s doubles but Kien Keat has left the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Soon Huat’s not giving up his Thomas Cup spot just yet

KUALA LUMPUR: What happened to national back-up shuttler Goh Soon Huat would have broken the spirit of a lesser man.
But, then, Soon Huat is made of sterner stuff.
The 24-year-old shuttler came out tops in the first selection trial last month to choose the fourth men’s singles player for the Thomas Cup Finals.
Unfortunately for him, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have decided to call for a second trial to accommodate two players – former national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun and former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli.

Ramdan and Zulfadli did not participate in the first trial because they were both ill. They produced medical letters to justify their decisions to skip the trial.
But Soon Huat, though demoralised with the decision, is not about to let it dampen his spirit.
“I was disappointed when I found out about the second trial. I thought that I had done my part ... but I guess I’m still not considered good enough. I have accepted the decision and am looking forward to the fight to win a ticket to the Finals,” he said on Saturday.
“I went for the last Thomas Cup Finals (in Wuhan in 2012) as a sparring partner. I’ve had enough of being a sparring partner. This time, I want to be a member of the team.”
The three singles players confirmed for the Finals are world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren.
Soon Huat, last year’s Malaysian Open runner-up, however, admitted that the standard of all three players for the second trial “is quite close”.
He had lost to the skilful Ramdan once – at the Malaysian Open qualifying tournament in January – but beat him twice last year. He has a 1-1 record against the aggressive Zulfadli.
His match against Ramdan at the Malaysian Open was his first major outing in many months after taking a long break.
He had undergone surgery in October after suffering from constant dizzy spells. He even fainted while playing in the Indonesian Open GP Gold in September. Doctors found a blood clot near the area in his brain.
But the resolute Soon Huat proved that he had recovered completely when he defeated Tan Chun Seang and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif en route to winning the first trial.
“It (the second trial) will be a close affair among the three of us ... but I hope to come out a winner,” said Soon Huat.
Ramdan and Zulfadli will take on each other first tomorrow. The winner will then face Soon Huat.
In the men’s doubles, five players have confirmed their places. They are Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Tan Boong Heong.
BAM will now choose one more from these three players – Chan Peng Soon, Ow Yao Han and Koo Kien Keat.

Lin Dan on course for second straight title

KUALA LUMPUR: Five-time world champion Lin Dan of China powered into the final to stay on course for a third Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) men’s singles title in Gimcheon, South Korea.

Yesterday, the 30-year-old Lin Dan took only 27 minutes to blow away his younger compatriot Liu Kai 21-14, 21-13 in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with Japan’s Sho Sasaki.
Lin Dan, the 2010 and 2011 ABC champion, has an almost perfect record against the Japanese, with his only blemish being a loss at the 2011 Indonesian Open.
The former world No. 1 is eyeing back-to-back titles, having pocketed the China Masters Grand Prix Gold last Sunday in Changzhou, China.

马晋：尤杯之痛曾想伦敦后退役 爱臭美生活更精致

赛场上的马晋总是成熟冷静，处变不惊，似乎所有困难到她面前都能被轻松化解。

　　朋友眼中的马晋总是亲切友善，笑脸迎人，似乎所有生活上的困难在她面前都变得云淡风轻。

谈事业：奥运会后想过退役

“参加奥运会谁都想拿冠军，没拿冠军都会有遗憾，就像和我们打的波兰组合，他们有遗憾吗？肯定有！我觉得对于当时的我们来说，我们已经在奥运赛场上做到自 己所能做到的最好了，很幸运，起码我们可以去参加奥运会，可以获得银牌，其实我挺满足的。”回忆起那段让不少喜爱她的球迷遗憾的经历时，马晋依然表情淡 定，语气平缓。

聊人生：独立的“马氏”哲学

　　不得不说，生活中的马晋是一个哲学家。

　　遇到困难，马晋总能淡然面对；面对问题，马晋经常独立解决，这样的能力让马晋身边的人对她钦佩不已。然而，人非圣贤，没有人可以做到以一己之力克服生活中的一切困难，马晋也不例外。她也需要从外界获取帮助，只不过她获取帮助的方式显得与众不同。

　　“某个时间、某个地点、某个人，不经意说的某一句话都有可能对你有帮助，这就要看你能否抓住。”这就是马晋向外界寻求帮助的方法。她说：“身边朋友不 经意的一句话，有时就能解开我的一个困惑，可能连说话者本身都没在意。”马晋不喜欢刻意去找人说什么事，她更喜欢在不经意间的感悟。可能身边的人在今天和 昨天的同一时间说了同一句话，但对于马晋来说，她经常可以听出不同的东西，收获不同的心得。

國倫恐怕喝不到"湯"

傷病困擾、狀態不佳，作為大馬第3男單的劉國倫何時才能回勇？

　26歲的大馬男單好手劉國倫在過去今年表現還算不俗，尤其是在2012年連續躋身全英羽球賽和瑞士公開賽8強，並在同年的法國公開賽成功收穫首個超級系列賽男單冠軍。

　然而，自從在丹麥羽賽受傷后，他就一直面對傷病困擾。在今年德國羽賽雖有回勇跡象，奈何在之后的全英賽入選賽止步首圈；在出戰亞錦賽前，他也因舊患復發而缺席大馬黃金大獎賽和印度公開賽。

　儘管大馬羽總確定劉國倫在湯杯陣容的一席位，然而復出賽場的他至今仍未恢復最佳競技狀態，亞錦賽首圈不敵韓國選手李東根，勢必對大馬湯杯隊造成一定的打擊。

　在湯杯小組賽，大馬主要對手還是韓國和印度，韓國在雙打實力佔優，大馬若想取勝可能從單打搶分；印度男單近期實力突飛猛進，第3單打人選包括阿傑、索拉維瑪和古魯賽達，都有著一定的競爭力，即便是大馬選手在單打想取分，也不是一件易事。

　現距離湯杯賽剩余不到1個月，劉國倫當務之急就是解決如何在短期內恢復起狀態，否則大馬羽總是否該放手一搏、考慮讓年輕球手取代他的位置？

Super Dan looking good for another wildcard

KUALA LUMPUR: Five-time world champion Lin Dan of China is looking good to earn another wild card to compete in the World Championships in Denmark in August.

On Sunday, Lin Dan put up a stunning performance to win the men’s singles title at the China Masters Grand Prix Gold despite being out of competition for the last seven months. The 31-year-old made mincemeat of compatriot Tian Houwei, winning 21-14, 21-9 in a 49-minute final in Changzhou.

En route to the title, the unseeded Lin Dan was victorious – in straight games – over fourth seed Derek Wong of Singapore and compatriot Wang Zhengming, the top seed.

It was Lin Dan’s first appearance in an international tournament since beating world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the final of last year’s World Championships in Guangzhou in August.

Due to his seven-month absence, the 31-year-old Lin Dan is currently ranked a lowly 104th in the world. But based on his current form, Lin Dan is still considered as China’s, if not the world’s, most formidable player.

At last year’s World Championships, Lin Dan was given a wild card by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Despite a long break after winning the 2012 Olympic Games gold in London, Lin Dan showed his class by winning the world crown when his opponent Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei retired while trailing 17-20 in the rubber game.

Meanwhile, Lin Dan will shift his attention to the Asian Badminton Championships in Gimcheon, South Korea, starting on Wednesday.

Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand is the top seed followed by Shon Wan-ho of South Korea, Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam, Kento Momota of Japan and Hu Yun of Hong Kong, Chong Wei Feng of Malaysia, K. Srikanth of India and Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand.

李永波：冠军给林丹增加分数 增加我带他去汤杯决心

林丹[微博]拿到了中国羽毛球大师赛冠军，为自己挣了7000分的积分，而这个冠军能否帮助他赢得代表中国队征战汤姆斯杯的资格，国家体育总局乒羽中心副主任、中国羽毛球队总教练李永波解答了大家的疑问。

月，汤姆斯杯就将在印度打响，此前李永波表示林丹很有可能作为第三单打亮相。如今林丹夺得大师赛冠军，李永波表示：“这次比赛很大程度上，增加了我带他去汤杯的决心，增加了很多分数。但是我还要看看他在境外比赛的情况。大师赛毕竟是在国内，另外他还没有与顶尖的一线高手对决，要看接下来的韩国亚锦赛，他会不会有更好的表现，但从今天场上的竞技表现看，他仍然具备了保持高水平的能力。”

林丹今年已是31岁了，外界担心连续征战对林丹的体力有影响。但李永波并不担心。“林丹和其他人不一样，他一直保持着系统的训练，另外几乎没有什么伤病，对于他来说年龄并不是障碍。”

　　目前，中国羽毛球已进入到汤尤杯的备战中，关于汤尤杯的人选何时公布，李永波透露：“世界羽联规定在5月3日将名单定下来，但考虑到五一的小长假，我们的名单会在4月30日定下来，现在已经有了一个大名单，但还没正式确定。”

不受韓國男雙解禁影響‧陳煒強：做好自己

大馬國羽男雙教練龐學章早已決定讓主力男雙如雲天豪與陳煒強、吳偉申與林欽華、以及陳文宏與區耀漢等球員在新加坡超級賽後休戰一個月，以全力備戰5月18日至25日的湯杯團體賽。

陳煒強今日接受《星洲體育》電話訪問時表示：“我們男雙球員最近都不會有比賽，都在武吉加拉冠軍體育館訓練備戰湯杯，只有小將們出戰亞洲羽球錦標賽。”

“雖然我和天豪近期在幾項比賽中狀態起伏，但我們已在最後一戰新加坡超級賽回升，並打進了複賽。”

“我坦然面對狀態總會有起伏的情況，當打法被對手研究後，我們就必須要有所突破，這是我們必須面對的問題，最重要的就是我們必須找出解決問題的方法，我希望能不斷提昇實力，更上一層樓。”

中國大師賽‧毅權芸茹止步4強‧林丹坐亞望冠

（中國‧常州19日訊）大馬的陳毅權與林芸茹今日在中國羽球大師賽（黃金大獎賽）混雙半決賽中，力戰3局輸給中國的第3種子魯愷與黃雅瓊，緣慳決賽；而中國的林丹也輕易闖進決賽與田厚威爭奪冠軍。

由於女單提前包攬半決賽權，男單與混雙也鎖定了兩席決賽門券，中國隊提前拿到3個冠軍，5冠也幾乎垂手可得。
毅權與芸如這對新配搭表現不俗，雖然最終以15比21、21比17、12比21敗給魯愷與黃雅瓊，但表現仍值得一讚。
隨著魯愷與黃雅瓊的勝出，中國也穩奪第2項冠軍，魯愷與黃雅瓊將在明日決賽迎戰隊友王懿律與夏歡或劉雨辰與駱贏。

Daren hoping for better result at Asian meet

KUALA LUMPUR: A fitter national men’s singles shuttler Liew Daren is back in the fray and hoping to boost his confidence ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals in New Delhi from May 18-25.
Daren left for Gimcheon in South Korea on Saturday to compete in the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) starting on Wednesday and he is looking forward to a possible meeting against five-time world champion Lin Dan of China.
The ABC is Daren’s first tournament since crashing out in the first round of the All-England qualifying tournament in Birmingham in early March.
The 27-year-old Daren has been out of action for more than a month due to a recurring hamstring injury.

His world ranking suffered due to his absence from the international stage as it dropped from top-20 to No. 63.
He is now the sixth-ranked Malaysian player in the world standings behind No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng (No. 20), Tan Chun Seang (No. 47), Misbun Ramdan Misbun (No. 49) and Zulfadli Zulkiffli (No. 58).
“It has been more than a month since I took part in a competition. I’m now injury-free and I so badly want to make my way up again. The ABC is a platform to revive my confidence and put me back in the right frame of mind going into the Thomas Cup Finals,” said Daren, who is set to play as the third singles in the Finals.
If everything goes to plan at the ABC, he may get a chance to play against Lin Dan in the quarter-finals.
Lin Dan is highly fancied to be named as the third singles for China’s team. All the countries have until May 4 to submit their entries by name to the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
“It will be great if I can cross paths with Lin Dan at the ABC since I may meet him in the Thomas Cup Finals. I played against him at the last edition of the Finals and managed to steal a game,” said Daren.
At the Finals in Wuhan in 2012, Daren had to assume the role of first singles after Chong Wei was ruled out of the competition with an ankle injury. In the quarter-finals against China, Daren gave a good fight before bowing out to Lin Dan.
In order to set up a quarter-final clash with Lin Dan at the ABC, the 2012 French Open champion will have to overcome rising South Korean star Lee Dong-keun in the first round and probably top seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in the second.
Lin Dan is expected to get past K. Srikanth of India and Chen Chou-tien of Taiwan for a place in the quarter-finals.
The other Malaysian singles players who have qualified for the ABC are Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat and Chong Yee Han.

Lin Dan on his way to first title of 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia were sent packing at the China Masters Grand Prix Gold in Changzhou, while local hero and five-time world champion Lin Dan is on the verge of winning his first title since making a comeback.
On Saturday, mixed doubles pair Tan Aik Quan-Lim Yin Loo went down fighting 15-21, 21-17, 12-21 to China’s Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong in a 65-minute semi-final match.
Aik Quan-Yin Loo were the only Malaysians left in the GP Gold semi-finals as all others had crashed out earlier. The other Malaysian casualties are Goh Soon Huat, Soo Teck Zhi, Chong Yee Han, Soong Joo Ven, Mohd Nur Azriyn Ayub (men’s singles); Chooi Kah Ming-Teo Ee Yi, Tai Ah Khang-Woon Choon Mun, Tan Chee Tean-Wong Fai Yin (men’s doubles); Ong Jian Guo-Lee Meng Yean, Wong Fai Yin-Chow Mei Kuan, and Tan Chee Tean-Shevon Lai Jemie (mixed doubles).
Meanwhile, Lin Dan proved that he has not lost his touch when he tamed his younger compatriot and top seed Wang Zhengming 21-19, 21-12 in 45 minutes.

He will take on another junior, Tian Houwei, in the final on Sunday and should easily win it.
The GP Gold is Lin Dan’s first tournament since crushing Lee Chong Wei in the final of the World Championships in Guangzhou last year. It is only his third international Open since defending the gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012.

Malaysia's lack of depth a glaring problem

ALOR SETAR: Malaysia were let down at the World Junior Championships by one thing – a lack of depth.
Malaysia’s 22 junior shuttlers just have not reached the same level of strength and skill as their peers from China, South Korea, Japan and Indonesia.
The only ones who looked impressive were boys’ singles player Cheam June Wei (Malaysia’s only seeded player) and mixed doubles pair Tan Jinn Hwa-Goh Yea Ching, who also went on to make the quarter-finals of the individual competition.
In addition, losing girls’ singles player S. Kisona to a suspected ligament problem during the final-16 stage of the mixed team event made matters worse for Malaysia.

In comparison, China won the mixed team event last week and made four finals in the individual competition – boys’ singles (all-China final), girls’ singles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.
What went wrong for Malaysia was clear from the onset.
“You can form a team with two or three players, but it won’t be very good. It won’t be a team that strike fear in other countries,” said national junior head coach Zhou Kejian.
“June Wei, (Lee) Ying Ying and Jinn Hwa and Yea Ching proved they’re fighters with comeback wins. They have the skills and that fighting spirit, which is promising.
“Also, Kisona could have been a real threat for us. After the Asian Juniors, she built up such a good momentum ... it was just so unlucky for her and us because I think she would have done quite well here.”
The only solution for Kejian is a much more aggressive approach in nurturing talents.
China has 22 provinces and if each province can produce just five badminton players a year, that’s a whopping 110 players.
And as cream does rise to the top, China’s method of mass production only means that while we sit and wait for one bright star to be discovered, they are basically guaranteed of producing at least 10 of the highest calibre.
The Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) in Johor have been at the forefront of talent development.
There is also SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin in Sabah and the Malaysia Pahang Sports School in Gambang which concentrates solely on football. Perlis is also set to join the ranks with a sports school of its own.
But it doesn’t seem to be enough, not for badminton at least.
“We don’t have a busload of talents coming from BJSS every year. At best, we have maybe 14 to 15 shuttlers in total. That’s just not enough, not when China have probably five to six times that number in a year,” stressed Kejian.
“There needs to be a big change ... an overhaul because we won’t be able to sustain much longer at this rate. But, it’s beyond my control. Even if they have success at the junior level, what happens when they move on to the back-up squad is not my call.
“The only consolation is that some of the top juniors from China are 18 now, so the younger ones like June Wei, (Goh) Jin Wei and others have to make full use of their time now and work hard for next year and take advantage of that.”
Malaysia have not made it to a World Junior final since Zulfadli Zulkiffli and Nelson Heg Wei Keat-Teo Ee Yi emerged champions in the boys’ singles and boys’ doubles respectively in 2011.

Guipu sends top seed Jonatan packing

ALOR SETAR: It was a different Lin Guipu who showed up at the quarter-finals of the World Junior Championships.
That made all the difference as the Chinese shuttler sent top seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia crashing out of the boys’ singles on Wednesday.
Guipu, who had a lacklustre outing in the mixed team event, rarely put a foot wrong to score a 21-17, 21-18 win in 45 minutes at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium here.
“I think I won because I didn’t think too much. Plus, I think the pressure was definitely on Jonathan today. He played well, but maybe I edged him out because I didn’t give up,” said Guipu as he high-fived boys’ doubles player Xu Linhan who walked pass.

Unseeded Guipu is set to face team-mate and joint third seed Zhao Junpeng in an all-China semi-final after the latter defeated Malaysia’s Cheam June Wei 18-21, 21-12, 21-17 in another quarter-final match.
“I never think that far ahead, I just think about the next match. Playing a team-mate is never easy so I will go into the match ready for a fight ... Even if it goes into three, four, five games ... I will not give up,” stressed Guipu.
In another boys’ singles quarter-final match, second seed Shi Yuqi downed Malaysia’s R. Satheishtharan 21-12, 21-7 to set up a match against Anthony Ginting of Indonesia who was in top form on Wednesday, defeating Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama 21-13, 21-5.
In the girls’ singles, Thursday’s semi-finals will see China taking on Japan in both matches.
Top seed Akane Yamaguchi, who beat Singapore’s Liang Xiaoyu 21-11, 16-21, 21-17, will take on China’s Qin Jingjing. Jingjing on Wednesday beat Thailand’s Chochuwong Pornpawee 21-15, 10-21, 21-18.
Meanwhile, joint third seed Aya Ohori, who came back from a game down to beat compatriot Natsuki Nidara 20-22, 21-18, 21-10, will take on He Bingjiao, who beat Busanan Ongbumrungpan of Thailand 21-11, 21-14.
Indonesia’s mixed doubles pair Muhammad Rian Adrianto and Rosyita Eka Putri Sari kept Indonesia’s hopes of getting to at least one doubles final alive by making the semi-finals of three events – the mixed, boys’ and girls’ doubles.
Together, the duo will face South Korea’s Park Kyung-hoon-Park Keun-hye in the final four on Thursday with Rian and Clinton Hendrik Kudasama set to take on Japan’s Masahide Nakata-Katsuki Tamate in the boy’s doubles, while Rosyita and Apriani Rahayu face China’s Jiang Binbing-Tang Pingyang.

Ramdan, Zulfadli, Sannatasah get Thomas-Uber Cup chance

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are once again throwing a lifeline to three former internationals to win places in the squad for the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals from May 18-25 in New Delhi.
Former national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun, Zulfadli Zulkifli and Sannatasah Saniru have been invited to take part in a second round of selection trials, which will take place on April 28 at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.
When the BAM conducted their first selection trials last month, Ramdan and Zulfadli could not attend because both were ill.
In their absence, last year’s Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold runner-up Goh Soon Huat won the trial, which also saw the participation of former internationals Tan Chun Seang and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif.

The win put Soon Huat as the frontrunner for the last spot in the Thomas Cup men’s singles team. The three other slots had been confirmed by world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren.

In the men’s doubles, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Tan Boon Heong have confirmed their places and the coaches will decide soon on the last slot. It comes down to either Ow Yao Han or Chan Peng Soon.
The BAM did not conduct a trial for the women’s singles last month and eventually, four players – Tee Jing Yi, Yang Li Lian, Lim Chiew Sien and Lim Yin Fun - were named in their tentative list.
That decision however, did not go down too well with Sabah Badminton Association (SBA) as they felt the country’s second ranked player Sannatasah, who turned pro last year, deserved a spot.
The SBA sent an official letter, asking BAM to re-consider Sannatasah, and their move has certainly paid dividends.
On Thursday, national singles chief coach Rashid Sidek, who has been put in charge of overseeing the preparations of the Thomas-Uber Cup teams, said that Soon Huat will have to attend the trials again.
“We are aware that Soon Huat has taken part in the first stage but two others could not make it because of medical reasons. In good faith, BAM will be sending out an invitation to Ramdan and Zulfadli to attend the trials again,” said Rashid.
“The trial for the men’s singles will not be done on a round robin format. Ramdan and Zulfadli will have to take on each other first. The winner will then challenge Soon Huat for a spot in the Finals.”
In the women’s singles, Rashid said that only national No. 1 Tee Jing Yi is exempted from the trials. The others – Li Lian, Chiew Sien and Yin Fun will play in a round robin together with Sannatasah.
On the proposed team’s centralised and motivation camp for the Finals, Rashid said: “We still have not decided on a venue for the camp. There was a suggestion to have the camp in Penang but now, we may have to have it elsewhere because of a lack of facilities there.”
BAM have to submit entries by name for the Finals to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on May 4.

Qingchen wins big at World Juniors

ALOR SETAR: China’s Chen Qingchen could not dream of a better way to end her junior career in badminton than by smashing her way to two gold medals at the World Junior Championships.
The 18-year-old successfully defended the mixed doubles title with partner Huang Kaixiang as they easily beat Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Adrianto-Rosyita Eka Putri Sari 21-12, 21-17 in 30 minutes at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium on Friday.
The shuttler from Guangdong also bagged the girls’ doubles title with Jia Yifan after beating Apriani Rahayu-Rosyita 21-11, 21-14 in 26 minutes.
“This is the best ending for me. But the road is still long and I hope to keep this up well into my senior career. This is only the beginning for me,” said Qingchen.

“Even when we were trailing Indonesia in the second game, giving up was not an option. We just knew we had to do our best at every moment to make the victory ours,” said her mixed doubles partner Kaixiang.
“I think winning the Asian Juniors and two World Junior titles can help us progress to the next level. They are a testament to our ability, to prove ourselves worthy of a place in the China A team.”

林丹谈复出：从未真正离开 李宗伟给我鼓舞

林丹再次重新站回了赛场之上，他，还是那么强，还是那么黑，还是那么有号召力，和一年前在台北小巨 蛋复出时一模一样。但去年4月18日从台北开始的复出之路，不过是为了当年的世锦赛铺垫，而今年4月16日从常州出发的复出之路，则是为了朝着2016年 里约奥运会启航，毕竟在羽毛球的世界里，还没有人能连续四届出现在奥运殿堂，还没有人能实现奥运会三连冠的梦想，不用怀疑，这也是林丹的梦想。

对自己此番的回归到底还能不能够像去年一样重回顶点，林丹并没有正 面回答，但是他告诉本报记者：“其实今年我有看李宗伟的表现，他在全英和之后一系列的表现非常好，他比我还大半岁，这给了我很大鼓舞，很多人会担心我年龄 体力，我相信自己能够尽力做好，如果我保证自己系统训练，恢复的理想，比赛也都在参加，我相信我还是会不错的。”至于在里约我们会不会看到林丹，会看到一 个怎样的林丹，他用很坚定的语气说：“所以大家到时候看吧。”

李龍大金基正解禁‧偉申：太極虎更強大

（吉隆坡18日訊）韓國雙打奇才李龍大與隊友金基正已被世界羽聯解除一年禁賽令，大馬國家羽球隊男雙吳偉申表示，兩人回歸將讓太極虎在5月的湯杯賽如虎添翼。

偉申說：“我們都知道韓國原本就實力強勁，現在李龍大與金基正回歸將讓他們如虎添翼，也增加了我們擊敗他們的難度。”

偉申對此表示：“我們現在正積極備戰，當中教練龐學章也有稱讚我們的表現，但我不會因此感到自滿，我將更努力訓練，以在湯杯賽時證明自己。”

偉申也表示，他現在已逐漸感到壓力，因為教練已在訓練中提高了質量，特別是個人能力方面的訓練，但他也認為這是提昇實力與穩定性的機會。

李宗偉備戰奧運獲全職物理治療師支助

（吉隆坡18日訊）在國家青體部的同意下，大馬世界羽球一哥李宗偉已獲得一位全職物理治療師，以備戰2016年里約奧運會。

31歲的宗偉，最近重申自己將不會在今年年杪退役，會堅持至2016年里約奧運會。

“當時，我問宗偉有甚麼要求嗎？他要求一位全職的物理治療師。”

他說，他已指示國家體育研究院首席執行員拿督南蘭醫生委任一位有責任感的物理治療師給宗偉。

湯尤杯選拔賽‧羽總為3人亮綠燈

（吉隆坡18日訊）大馬羽總重新給3名前國手第2個機會，包括男單前全國冠軍米士本藍丹、前世青冠軍祖爾法里和女單莎娜達莎，以參加第2次選拔賽爭取入選大馬湯尤杯隊。

在男雙競爭中，大馬五名男雙球員是雲天豪與陳煒木強、吳偉申與林欽華及陳文宏，剩下一人是區耀漢或陳炳順。

大馬羽總沒有在上月舉行尤杯女單選拔賽，四名球員包括鄭清憶、翁麗蓮、林秋暹和林吟芳入選。不過沙巴羽總認為去年轉打職業球賽的莎娜達莎，身為國家次號女單理應獲選。

在尤杯女單選拔賽方面，拉錫表示，清憶是國羽首號女單獲免參加，其他三人將與莎娜達莎進行單循環制。

王适娴：现在目标就是保持好状态 争取参加奥运会

“今年赛季初我开了一个好头，希望能保持现在的状态，”王适娴赛后表示：“我希望将这种势头一直延续到里约奥运。我非常渴望参加奥运会，因为上一次我状态下滑没有机会参加，我现在的目标就是保持良好状态，尽最大努力争取参加奥运会。”

宗偉冠軍‧獻愛兒生日

（印度‧新德里7日訊）大馬一哥李宗偉昨日在印度羽球超級系列賽男單決賽再以2局完勝中國2號種子諶龍，第3度在印度賽封王，他賽後把冠軍獻給將在4月12日滿一週歲的愛兒李嘉謙。

宗偉在奪冠後笑容滿臉，他說：“我要把這個勝利獻給我的兒子嘉謙，他下週就一歲了。”

宗偉也確認他將馬不停蹄參加新加坡超級賽，並豪言要在本月連續奪得兩站超級賽冠軍。

對於明年是否重返印度參賽，宗偉表示：“我還不知道，但如果一切情況良好，我明年就會參賽，不過，我很確定我下個月一定會來到印度參加湯杯賽。謝謝印度球迷給我的支持。”

談回本場擊敗諶龍的決賽，宗偉表示：“我盡全力打出最佳表現，每一球都盡全力打回去，而我想諶龍沒有表現出最佳，他有一些簡單失誤。”
