PETALING JAYA: A bad first round defeat would have been a massive setback for any top shuttler.
But world No. 8 Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong, who are still smarting from their early exit at the Malaysian Open GP Gold to eventual winners Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Chayut Triyachart of Singapore, believe it is a challenge they have to overcome as they prepare for the India Open Superseries in New Delhi which begins on Wednesday.
The No. 1 pair in Malaysia, who are set to lead the doubles challenge for the Thomas Cup from May 18-25 in India, believe that it is better to take the pressure as a challenge rather than succumb to it.
“It’s true that we are not doing so well and the first round defeat to the Singaporean pair last week didn’t help at all,” said Wee Kiong.
“But we are aware that the pressure will always be there whether we do well or not. It is up to us to stay positive and take it as a challenge.
“That’s the only way we can keep getting better and eventually the results will come.
“As for the India Open, it will not be easy because we will have tough opponents from the first round onwards.
“But it is not an impossible mission. What is most important is that we need to play to our strengths and stay consistent for the results to come our way,” added Wee Kiong.
Thien How-Wee Kiong are seeded fifth for the India meet and will face China’s Kang Jun-Liu Cheng in the first round.
A win will likely pit them against Japan’s Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata, with top seeds Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa, also of Japan, awaiting in the quarter-finals.
Besides Thien How-Wee Kiong, all eyes will also be on Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah as they seek to rebound from a miserable Malaysian Open GP Gold final last Sunday where they lost to Danny-Chayut.
The Malaysian Open Superseries champions will face homesters Manu Attri-B. Sumeeth Reddy in the first round and are likely to run into South Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol in the second round.
Two other pairs - Tan Boon Heong-Ow Yao Han and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari are also in the main draw, although they face tougher opponents – second seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark and eighth seeds Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda of India respectively.
